FOOTWEAR TRADE.
MINISTER ON TARIFFS. INCREASES NOT LIKELY. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Friday. "We cannot play about lightly with tariffs," said tho Hon. H. T. Armstrong, Minister of Labour, commenting to-day on the difficulties of the footwear trade. "It is all very well for people to talk of higher tariffs, but we have got to consider our agreements with other parts of the Empire. If we break those agreements where do we stand with them?" The Minister said that since his recent visit to Christchurch and an inspection of footwear factories, a deputation from the manufacturers had met the Hon. W. Nash, Minister of Finance. He could say now that the Government would definitely do something for the industry, but it could be done without the necessity of resorting to tariff increases.
