MAORI ARRESTED.
INTOXICATED IN TRUCK. OFFBNOB AT WAIHEKE. Arrested at Surfdale last Saturday • fteroon for being in n state of intoxication while in charge of a motor truck »>n Waiheke Island. a Maori, Huritrnngi Kawhi, tiged 49, appcnred in the? Police Court to-day and pleaded guilty. Sub-Inspector Fox said ('unstable AfrKen/.ie, stationed at Waiheke Inland, found Kawlii definitely intoxicated at 3.45 p.m. nil Saturday. He tried to reason with the Maori and pet him to go homo and leave the car, hut this Kawhi refused to do, no he wan arrested and brought to Auckland by special launch at a cost of £•'!. Accused was in poor circumstances, and recently lost his wife. He wan n man of very good character, and could not pay a fir.e. The small amount of liquor he had iaknn in Auckland before returning to Waiheke must have affected Ka"whi, •aid Mr. Aekins, who appeared for him. The truck owned by Kawhi wai not worth more than £10, and he really did not need to retain it, so it would not matter if his liceme was cancelled. "A fine would only come out of the mouths of his three children, bo I propose to deal with him in a way that is nut of the ordinary," said Mr. C. R. Orr Walker, S.M. The Maori was admitted to probation for 12 months and ordered to pay the expenses, amounting to £3. He was prohibited, and his license was cancelled i'or three yearn.
