DONOGHUE RETIRES.
TO TAKE UP TRAINING. A FILLY PURCHASED. Steve Donoghue has retired from the saddle and is to take out a trainer's license this month. He will move into Hodeott House, West Ilsley, Berks., formerly occupied by Captain Gooch. At the recent Doncaster sales Donoghue paid o-iOgs for a lillv by Orwell from Pa mplona. The familiar racecourse cry, "Come on, Steve," was heard at a farewell dinner tendered to Donoghue by jockeys at the Piccadilly Hotel, those present including Gordon Richards, Joe Childs, "Brownie" Carslake and Michael Beary. The Earl of Lonsdale sent a message expressing his greatest admiration for Donogliue's riding and wishing him every happiness in his new sphere as trainer. Richards presented Donoghue with a silver trophy engraved with the signatures of his brother jockeys. Donoghue, in replying, said his proudest moment would be when he produced the horse on which Richards would win his first Derliv.
