CHANCES OF SANDUSKY BRIGHT.

Refund's Good RecordTwo on End this Season. It is a long time since there has been such a vintage year for three-year-olds, and the New Zealand Derby, to be run on the second day of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club's spring meeting next week, promises to prove one of the highlights of the three days' sport. The race includes six winners this season, and while the public will probably pin their faith to Sandusky, Refund, and Two's Loose, there is plenty of other material engaged. Auckland interest will centre in the performance of Sandusky. This colt is one of the best produced in this province for some years, and although he has yet to win a classic race it cannot be said that he has had any the best of luck in either of his two clashes against the three-year-olds. In the Sapling Stakes Sandusky was badly pocketed on the rails three furlongs from home, and the colt was not extricated until the race was practically decided. However, the speed at which he travelled over the last bit enabled him to get within a neck of Two's Loose, and the unanimous opinion was expressed that with a better run early Sandusky would have won comfortably. Later, at Hutt Park in the Wellington Stakes, Sandusky was 1 forced to go to the front three furlongs from the post, and making the pace

against a strong head wind did not assist him to finish on, and Refund beat him by a length. Sandusky lias proved that he has not gone off in the interim with a victory at Hutt Park last week, and the black pacer should just about turn the tables on his rivals next week.

Won at His Only Two Starts. With two victories to his credit in his only two starts to date Refund will come in for serious consideration. He displays rare courage over the final stages of a race, and gives every indication that he will reach a much tighter mark. Refund is a typical Great Bingen in conformation, inheriting a lot of his sire's characteristics, especially in the way he responds when asked for a little extra. Xyallo, the dam of Refund, has already produced a New Zealand Derby winner in Taxpayer, who is a full brother to this colt, and history would be created if Refund won. When Two's Loose won the Sapling Stakes as a two-year-old he was expected to play a leading part in the decision of three-year-old events this season, but in his only start to date, in the Wellington Stakes, his effort was a most disappointing one. He was one of the leaders over the first mile, which was covered in 2.31. but when the pressure was applied at the turn failed to respond, and was well and truly beaten into third position. His form was too bad to be true, and it may be that it would be better to wait a little while before condemning the colt. Horsepower promised to be a firstclass colt this season, but his form of late has been anything but outstanding, and a victory for him would come in the nature of a surprise. However, should he make a good showing, his connections intend taking the son of Jack Potts and Free Advice to Australia early next year, where he will contest three classic races, including the Australian Derby Stakes. Perula and Taruna are promising sorts, but it is doubtful if tliev are good enough to collect the blue riband. The breeding of Perula is interesting, as his sire, Ciro, is a son of Wrack, while Wrackaway, who produced the colt, is also by Wrack. Stamboul and Bayard have shown speed, but Rerekahu, Blavdon, and Waikari Jack have yet to fill a place. The race is sure to provide a great betting medium, and when it is finally summed up it may be found that most money is invested upon Sandusky, Refund, and Two's Loose.
