NO MORE SPENDING.
PAPAKURA BOARD'S DECISION.

Bartels at a meeting of the Papakura Town Board last evening when an application was hefore the board for help in makin" the proposed new croquet lawn fit to olav on. r • I Mr. D. Weir had eaid, "What with rising costs and a stationary revenue we cannot possibly grant these applications." He would oppose spending any more money on sports grounds. This rawed Mr. Bartels to point out that the board had recently spent £145 on flood lighting the park! £1200 on a bowling oxeen. and nearly £100 oufcimprovmg the tennis courts. "And"ow you are quibblinsr as to whether vou should give the ladies some help which would be probably not more than £20. You are not playing the game." Mr. ft. W. Kerr: T"m going to oppose this continual spending on sport. It ie growing, and growing, and <*rowin°until . . . The rest of Mr. Kerr's remarks were lost owing to an interjection by Mr. Spinley. "But Papaknra is growing as well, and we muet meet growing needs. - '
Mr. Spinley then moved that the croquet club's request be granted. The motion was carried, Mr. Kerr alone dissenting;.
Later in the evening the question arose again, when a letter from the -cricket ohib was received asking for water to be laid on to the cricket pitch. Mr. Kerr ajrain calling attention to this continual spending on sports. The request was granted. Tt was then decided to inform all local sports bodies that no more money would be spent thie year on sports ground*.
