OPOTIKf, this day
Reports have been received that Whale Island has become an active volcano for the first time in the knowledge of white residents. It was known that hot pools previously existed near the shore. This probably accounted for the number of earthquakes which continue to be felt. White Island hae also been very active during the last few days. Whale Island is in the Bay of Plenty seven miles north of the *Whakatane River entrance. A whaling station was established there in 1833 bv a Scottish settler. Gilbert Mair. White Island is also in the Bav of Plenty, lying 27 miles from the «hore and 38 miles west from Cape Runaway. It is four miles in circumference and is 107-jft high. In 1914 there was an eruption and several sulphur mine workers were entombed. A blowhole on the island emit* dense clouds of steam.
