Chinese Lines Hold Against Japanese Forces.

WELLINGTON, this day. The Chinese Consul has received a Cablegram from Nanking stating that severe fighting took place north-west of Tazung. Under cover of aerial and artillery bombardment the Japanese made repeated unsuccessful attempts to break through the Chinese line.
Chinese forces counter-attacked nt three point* and surrounded a Japanese salient by a semi-circular cordon, (annuities on both sides were heavy. Japanese troops are now digging in.
Japanese batterie* arc pounding K wanjff lichen, west of the Loticn - Liuhang highway, but the Chinese defenders are confident of the invulnerability of their defence works, and large reinforcements are prej>aring for emergencies.
Eaet of the Liuhang-Tazang highway the Chinese successfully withstood attack* of Japanese mechanised unit*. At Wentsaopany, Japanese were ambushed and suffered heavy losses. They bombed and machine gunned Pingwang, Pat«e and Minchsingchiao stations on the Shanghai-Hangchow-Xingpo line. Civilian casualties were considerable.

Trade unions are organising an antiJapanese boycott and urging the Government to close ports to Japanese goods. SHELLS FROM EMDEN. roUND ON JAPANESE LUGGER. | SINGAPORE, October 21. Following stories in circulation on the Singapore waterfront that a Japanese •hip was in the harbour carrying munitions, the police searched and found a 7-Vton Japanese lugger with 400 unexploded six-inch shells on board. The crew said the shells were found buried on a beach in the Indian Ocean. Marks on the casings confirm the fact that the shells are from the German warship Emden. which was destroyed nt the Cocoa Islands during the (treat. War.
