MEN'S LOSS IN WAGES.
SHORTER WORKING WEEK
(From Our Correspondent.) PUKEKOHE, Thursday. The introduction of a 40-hour week for the Pukekolie Borough Council workmen, in compliance with the award which came into operation on October 14, means a loss in wages of 3/8 a week for each man.
The council last evening took the option given under the award of employing the men by the week at the specified weekly waji of £4 8/4. in lieu of bv the hour, at the hourly rate of 2/4. The town clerk, Mr. S. Bish, had explained that the men had been working a 44-hour week, for which they were paid £4 12/. If employed now by the hour they would receive £4 13/4 for a week of 40 hours. However, any time lost through wet weather or other adverse factors would reduce this amount. The borough foreman, Mr. S. Clews, said the men would probably prefer to be employed oil a wjefcly basis at £4 8/4.
