RHEIMS CATHEDRAL. War-torn Edifice Restored For Worship. HIT SY 287 SHELLS. United Press Association. —Copyright. (Received 10.30 a.m.) RHEIMS, October 18. After 23 years' interruption owing to its having been damaged by the Germans during the war, Rheinas Cathedral, now completely restored, was reopened for public worship with a seven-hour ceremony. Cardinal Suhard, Archbishop of Rheims, who was the celebrant, explained that, despite the fact that it has existed since the fifteenth century and that 25 French kings have been crowned there, the Cathedral has never been consecrated. This ceremony, which was overlooked in ancient times, was being arranged when the war broke out. Altogether 287 shells directly hit the Cathedral, the first being on September 4, 1914, and the last on September 17, 1918.
