WORKING WELL.
CHANCES OF KEWPIE'S KING. Nothing is bearing a brighter appearance at Epsom than the chestnut pacer Kewpie's King and he is fairly revelling in the work being allotted him by A. Bryce. This horse has been responsible for some first-class performances during the past couple of mont s and if anything has improved a« the result. At Epsom in August he went two fine races to fill the role of runner-up in the two principal races and maybe his turn will come at this meeting. Ae a three-year-old Kewpie's King promised to take a high class among the pacers in Auckland, and F. J. Smith was confident that he was a cup horse in the making. However, he was troubled with soreness and this became so serious .that it was deemed advisable to turn him out for a long spell. On his being recommiasioned he was placed in the bands of C. H. Good-all, who was then training at Epsom, and to this mentor a lot of credit is due for the son of Blue Mountain King being brought back to his best. He showed a lot of patience when the chestnut did not look like standing a preparation and as a result Kewpie's King now appears certain to stand right up to his work. Last week Kewpie's King was sent over two miles and was rcsiKineible for a brilliant effort. He ran the full distance in 4.28 and the final mile and a half in 3.19. He finished full of running and was staying on splendidly. On that effort alone the chestnut should not be long off the winning list and even if he fails in the Jellicoe Handicap he should have a further opportunity in the Electric Handicap, run over a mile and a quarter.
