SYNOD AFFAIRS.
CATHEDRAL CHAPTER DEAN.
PUREWA CEMETERY CONTROL.
The concurrence of the Auckland Anglican Synod is to be sought by Archbishop Averill in a proposal to raise the status of Canon W. Fanconrt to that of dean. Notice of motion to this effect was given at the opening of Synod yesterday.,
Archbishop Averill said that as he was very anxious that the Cathedral Chapter should become a functioning body in connection with the preliminary steps for the .erection of a new cathedral and that it would be prepared to take its proper place when the cathedral was built, he thought the time was opportune for raising the status of the vicar of the cathedral parish to that of dean. Canon Faneourt had been vicar of the Cathedral Church and parish of St. Mary's since 1029.
A change in the control of the denominational cemetery at Purewa was decided upon - after a discussion in committee. The standing committee of the diocese will appoint a board of managers for the cemetery, and the board will report annually" to Synod. Mr. W. Skegg, chairman of a commission appointed last year to inquire into a suggested change of control, described the present state of the cemetery as being one of sad neglect and dilapidation. A drastic change was needed, although the commission did not wish to cast reflection in any way upon the St.. John's College Trust Board.
Reports of other committees and commissions were dealt with by Synod yesterday afternoon and evening." A conference of lay members is being held to-day. and further general business will be taken to-night.
