SMART SPRINTS.

WORK AT TE RAP A.

TOSH AND DARK SHADOW. (By Telegraph—Own Correspondent.) ' HAMILTON, thia day. Smart times were a feature of the track work at Te Rapa this morning, when the final gallop* of a, number of local candidate* with engagements at the Auckland meeting took place, 44ft out from the rails. The going was faster than for some time past, and the best figures of tiie morning were recorded by the sprint candidate Tosh. Dark Shadow was another to please.

Dark Shadow (Thomson), Sinking Fund (McKenzie) and Merial (Winder) finished in that order at the completion of six furlongs in 1.17 4-5, the first five furlongs in 1.5. It was a pleasing performance on the part of Dark Shadow, who will strip fit and well for pending engagements. Mark's Qift (Thomson) brushed over two furlongs along the back in 245.

An attractive trial was credited to Toch (Mclnally) who, assisted by Boughal (McLaughlin) over the last five, ran six furlongs in 1.16 ft. His first half-mile was cut out in 50s, and the five furlongs in 1.3 1-5. They finished on terms, and on this morning's showing Tosh will enter into calculation* for the sprint honour* at Ellerslie.

Kilberi* (Mclnally) also drew attention to his immediate prospect* by running once round in 2.4 1-5, after covering his first half-mile in 53 l-ss. Mangukaha (Thomson) got to the end of half a mile in 53 l-ss, her initial three furlongs being covered in 38 4-s*. She is coming to hand well. Desert Wings (Thomson) was doing better than Little Anglia (Long) over the deciding stages of half a mile in 52 4-ss. Prince of Orange (Ferguson) ran an easy half-mile, taking 57 3-ss. Lornacre (Long), who is bearing a well trained appearance, wa« accompanied by Inness Lad (Goulsbro) over an easy five furlongs, which they negotiated in 1.8 1-5. Lornacre'* recent track efforts have not been impressive, but he has been doing his work well. Te Rore (Goulsbro) dashed over three furlongs along the back in 38 4-ss. The two-year-old, Calorie, in Jones' stable, recorded 25s for a two-fur-long dash along the back.
