IN THE PUBLIC MIND.
SIXTY MILES AN HOUR.
ROADS AND RACING TRACKS.
(To the Editor.)
I respectfully disagree with "Barrister-at-Law" in hia criticism of the magistrate who held that driving a motor car at sixty miles an hour, whatever the locality, was an offence under section 2& of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1924. It is an offence under that section "to drive a motor vehicle at a speed . . . which, having regard to all -the circumstances of the case, is, or might be. dangerous to the public or to any person." This section is wider than the provision in the English Road Traffic Acts. On any roa<l in New Zealand, however quiet the locality, an elderly farmer, a Maori woman or a child may at any moment cross a highway, and in doing so be caught and struck by a motorist travelling like a bullet at this rate. Why should the King'e highway, for use by pedestrians as well as motorists, be converted into virtual racing tracks by "road hogs"? The magistrate's decision is to be highly commended. BARRISTER-AT-LAW (No. 2).
