N.Z. GOLF.

THE FOURSOMES.

HORNABROOK AGAIN.

TITIRANGI PAIR SECOND. i Further laurels came to J. P. Hornabrook when he an.l Guy Home (Hutt) won the New amateur foursomes championship with the imposing total of 147. Their morning card of 74 was bettered by B. O. Thompson (Middle-more) and A. E. Browne (North Shore), who combined wonderfully for a 73. The latter pmr had only one weak hole, a 6 at the W seventh. Their inward half, particularly . w ilS a model of consistency. Further interest was given to the proceeding* when J. I . Mortland and (!. B. Ward, holders of the title, returned a sterling 75. Their on j lap ße was two five> on the outward Jin f nt hoes where fours might reasonably have been forthcoming. Then along came J. If. Young and J. Galloway, the i litiranifi pair, with a 76, marred only by a 6 at the bogey 4 ninth. : H. Hattersley and G. M. Cutler, ' the : Sydney pair though having little luck held on to return a ,7 n score equalled by J>. I . Loll ns and l\ H. Horton, and J. R i Hobbs an,| H. l> Brinsden. The southern- I crs, K. Ross and A. Sime, flashed into the ' picture with a characteristic spurt of 35 ' home after a disastrous 43 outward,' while , * t. Fryer and H. E. Crosse r,ather re- <

verged the order in allowing a Sβ outward U> be spoilt by a 42 for the last nine.

The Kitto brothers were in frequent trouble on the outward journey, but came homo faultlessly in 35. Among those with ■ total of 70 were the youths P. G. Smith nnd L. J. Bryant, both of whom played well at New Plymouth last year.

Leaders Invincible. When the afternoon round commenced, the position wae full of possibilities. Hornabrook and Home, however, proved invincible. Tho former dieplayed wonderful accuracy. Several times at the lontf holee it appeared w if a 5 might go down on the card, but Hornabrook either chipped dead or elee holed a putt. Still. Home proved a very reliable partner. His long play was impressive end when it became a matter of adding the finishing touches Hornabrook invariably roae to tho occasion.

An interesting position developed at the ninth in the afternoon round when Young •nd Gnlloway, the eventual runners-tip, were only .one stroke in arrears of their redoubtable opponent*. Just as quickly, however, Hornabrook diepelled any fear of defrat by laying his tee shot dead at the tenth and at the next hole playing e brilliant second which' ;ensured the clipping of a further etroke from bogey. In three hole* after reaching the turn Hornnbrook nnd Home opened up a gap of five strokes on their rivak.

Attention then turned to Thomson and Browne, but after correct figures to the fourth; hole they collapeed with 5, 5, 7, 5. to ruin their chances. They had recompense, however, in winning the handicap event on their morning card of 73 —2—71. Next Mortland and Ward met with disaster, so that the position of the lenders wae secure.

B. M. Silk, who wan to have partnered Home, was unable to play owing to indiepoeition, but came to the linke late in the afternoon and practieed for a little while.

Max Moore, who wae to have played •with Horriabrook, injured his knee, and » getting about on crutches. He has scratched for the amateur championship.

Clear-eut win. Tlie professional foursomes resulted in a clear-cut win for C. C. Clements, holder of the professional title, and Basil Smith, jnn. Their rounds of 76 and 73 were practically free from fault, both having plnyed excellently. A. Dyke and J. Lambie led the first round with a card of 74, but their afternoon ecore of 79 left them four etrokce behind the winners. Guy And Weir filled third place with 154. but much of Guy's golf was faulty. Shaw *nd Bell, and Murray and Mose did beet of the others, but Bell and Murray .were rather out of touch. Otherwiee it ie certain that different history would have been written. The Amateurs.
