BUOYANT TRADE.
RETURNS FOR AUGUST. BIG INCREASE IN IMPORTS. TURNOVER EXCEEDS £10,000,000. New Zealand's overseas trade for August involved a turnover of £10,000,000 in goods, comprising exports to the value of £4,457,000, and imports £6,008,000. The turnover for the month and the total of imports are both record figures for many years. . The excess of imports over exports, though purely a seasonal phase. show**isoper cent increase on last year's figure.
The most remarkable feature of the month's trade was the rise in imports from £4,800,000 in July to over £6,000,000. This is a record figure for at least five years. The figures for August of the past four years were as follow: — Exports. Imports. Exports have increased 25 per cent compared with the same period last year, and imports are up 33 1-3 per cent. The total of imports is almost double that of 1934. The following table compares the eight months ended August 31, for the past four years : — Exports. Imports. For the eight months ended August 31 exports of specie were made to the value of £3500 and imports £98,649.
