AMATEUR'S OPEN.

DRAMATIC FINISH. THREE TIE AT 299. THE LEADERS OVERHAULED. For the sixtb time in tlie history of Hio Open golf championship, which was inaugurated in 1007, nn amateur ha* successfully challenged the professionals nnd won the New Zealand golf title. J. P. Hornabrook in the latent amateur winner, hut hw success came about only ifter the disqualification of A. J. Murray, the Auckland professional, and a subsequent plny-off with two other professionals, E. J. Mom (Auckland) and A. .7. Shaw (Wellington).

Murray and Hornabrook started tbe last rntind three strokes behind Moss and Shaw six strokes behind him. Shaw was drawn before the others, nnd played his host round of the competition, a 72, which gave him a total of 200. Moss was in trouble for the greater part of the first half of his last round, which took him 40, and when ho finished in 78 ho could only equal Shaw's total. Murray and TTornabrook followed, and when the former reached the turn in 36 he had a one-stroke lend of Moss. Hornabrook took 38, and had picked up two strokts on the lender. There was little between the pair in the last nine, and they finished as 38, and had picked up two strokes on the them—Murray 73, and Hornabrook 75. Tills gnvo Murray an aggregate of 297, while Hornabrook joined the other two with 290.

There had been whinnerir** Around the rniirne that Murray may have infringed the rule* when on the eighth green he struck his ball along the green while awaiting hi* turn to hole out. The rumour wn» confirmed when a committee met immediately aftor Murray had completed hi* round, and it decided that it hurl no option but to disqualify him.

Thin left the three who had tied for serond place to play off over 18 holes yesterday morning. Hornabrook won with a round of 73, against Mom' 75 and Shaw's 78.

Actually only three other amateurs have won the open. A. D. 8. Duncan having been successful three times. The other winners are E. M. McFarlane and S. Morpeth.

It waa obvious after the first round that Hornabrook would carry the atrongeat amateur challenge to the pTofeaaionala, and though his victory came about following the disqualification of Murray it was full of merit. Hornabrook is a fine ahot maker, an attractive stylist and aa good a putter as there is in New Zealand, and it is on the greens that title are won.
