FOUR SPRING RACE MEETINGS.

TAUMARUNUI CLUB'S OPENING DAY. FIXTURES AT KUROW AND OTAKI TROTTING IN PROGRESS AT METHVEN. There are three race meetings and one trotting fixture being field in the Dominion to-day, and chief interest will centre in the opening day of the Taumarunui Jockey Club, which is being held at Pneroa. The Otaki and Kurow clubs are holding one-day meetings, while trotting enthusiasts are being catered for with the Methven meeting.

Tho meeting opened with tho Kercpeehl Handicap in which Awatea Princess scored a surprise win. She was well back early, but finished fast on tho outside to win by a narrow margin. Te Maranui was always handily placed, and ran 11 good race. High Sea came hotm* solidly from a rear position, and is a likely Improver. Tama Abbey dwelt at tho start and Slain led along tho back from Awatea Priucoss, Raccllne, Te Maranui, To Poto and Gai Wind. Crossing tho top Slam was attended by T» Poto, Raceline, Awatea Princess and Tu Maranui, with High Sea well back. The flrst-named trio wore followed into the straight by To Maranui, Backblock and Awatea Princes*. In tho run honlo the last-named came fast on the outside and won by a nwk from To Maranui, with High Sea a length away. Raceline, Slam and Gai Wind were next.

The Hurdles. L'Allegro was sent out favourite for tho Handicap Hurdles, and niter being In tho middle of the Hold most of tho way staved on to get tho verdict. He made a faulty jump at the last fence, but his pace stood to him over the last furlong. Count Rousslllioi) wan always lu tho picture and ninde a good showing, uh did Sirroni. who flu lulled fast on tho Inside, 811111111 led out from Belbroney. Kllberls, Retiwr nnd Bells of How. Belbroney had charge pas-tting the stand from Kllberis, King Tim, Retnar, Bulls of Bow and L'Allegro. Kilberjs ran <lown the hurdle by the sevenfurlong post and was pulled up, the order . along the hack being Belbroney, Count Roussillion, Sinilnt, Bells of Bow, Retnar and Ntuuwteiid, with Sirroni, Sandy Mountain and L'Allegro next. Turning lor homo, Simint and Count RouAsilllon were on terms, with Stanstead, Bells of Bow, L'Allegro, Sandy Mountain and Sirroni handy. L'Allegro did best over tho llnal furlong, and although he did not take the last hurdle too well, stayed on to win by half a length from Count Roussillion, who beat Sirroni by a similar margin. Stanstead, Simint, Bells of Bow, Sandy Mountain, Belbroney, Siwell and Gawcyno were next.

A Big Dividend. Loading all tlio way in the Trial Handicap, flold Van lit returned a dividend jiMt short of four ecoro.
