MANGERE BUS SERVICE.
It appears the company now running the Auckland-Pa patoctoe, via Mangere. bus service is jinable to do so at a profit, in spite of the fact that it is protected from competition bv a paternal Government. Without this protection, undoubtedly, rival concerns would have run over the same route during the past few years with resultant benefits to Mancere residents. However, this was not to be. and we of the district have suffered in conscnrcnce. Would it be reasonable to ask that the Railways Department take over the servi?ef Assuming that this particular service is run at a loss, it would not be too much to hoj>e that the Department would be willing to stand it in view of the fact that the ' locnl residents have to pay their share of the railway losses and with little benefit to thenisel\es. A further suggestion is offered that the l ail ways take over other services under the co-ordination of transport scheme. From the point of view of the taxpayer this would be fail and reasonable. consideriii" r that the buses are rumvng in competition*' with the people's own service. Further, the profit* accruing from these other servi-es. which it. is presumed are profitable, could lie set off against the alleged loss oil the M-pi'rere section. W.li.
