FILLY SURPRISE. SUCCESSFUL OPERATION. SUBSTANCE UNDER SKIN. An interesting story is wraped up in jtlie acquisition of the Nightmarch—Tliea i ; two-year-old filly by the Matamata | owner-trainer Mr. .T. Clothier. | The filly was bred by Mr. A. Louisson. ! of Christ church, and was sold at the last I Trentham sales to Mr. Webb, who purchased a batch of yearlings on behalf of ; the Singapore Turf Club. The filly, j although purchased outright, failed to ipass the necessary veterinary examination and was left behind. She was j offered for ~ale by Mr. Webb at the jCiraiul National sales at Christcliureh, i where she failed to bring the reserve.

The lilly had been inspected bv 'Mr. ( lothier at the Trentham <sale, and when lie hoard she was not sold he made an offer t<> Mr. Webb which was accepted. The blemish on the filly which caused her to be left out of the overseas shipment and probably to be passed in at the sales, was a hard substance under the skin on the offside rump. Between the sales the youngster had been broken in. ; Upon again inspecting the tilly on her I arrival at Matamata, Mr. Clothier was 1 so mystified with the uncommon blemish | that he called in Mr. Gruenyald. a veterinary surgeon. An operation was perj formed and a piece of bone about six

inches in length, three inches in breadth and a sixteenth of an inch thick v.-as extracted. The operation was so successful that although Mr. Clothier purchased the filly for use as a brood mare he intends putting her into work shortly with a view to racing her. The wound has almost healed. Several who have inspected the foreign substance are of opinion that it is part of the sbouWer blade of a beast which might have »»» i picked up when the ynuiigster was lin a paddock as a foal- , U "f jshc shown the slightest signs
