THE WEEK'S WORK.
THE FLOWER GARDEN. Make a sowing of Asters; use sterilised soil to control Aster wilt. Stocks can be planted. A planting of Brompton Stocks will give winter blooms. Sweet Peas must be kept trained to their supports. Keep flowers closely cut and reduce laterals if large blooms are required. Plant Gladioli; use no manure and make sure corms are sterilised before planting. Prepare beds for Dahlias. Planting can be done this month for early blooms. Prepare Chrysanthemum beds. Planting can commence during the next two or three weeks. Fill in any gaps in the beds that are planted. Most of the hardy bedding varieties can be planted now. Phlox Drummondii, Schizanthus, Nemesias can be sown. Prune spring flowering shrubs as they go out of flower. THE VEGETABLE GARDEN. Make a sowing of Celery and Celeriac. The latter is a good vegetable, especially for soups. Sow Dwarf and Runner Beans. Allow them room to develop by thin sowing. Plant Leeks, Brussels Sprouts, Broccoli, Cabbage, Cauliflowers. Make frequent sowings of Lettuce, Radish, Mustard and Cress. Sowings of main crop Carrots can be made. If Parsnips are not yet sown, this should be attended to at once. Asparagus should be cut as soon as ready; cut everything; to leave the small heads to develop will check the supply. The Onion bed must be kept clean, but avoid scratching the bulbs with the hoe. In sheltered positions Tomatoes can be planted. A sowing can be made for planting out in November. Sow Spinach as required. This can be sown between rows of Runner Beans or on Celery trenches. THE FRUIT GARDEN. Any pruning should be finished and rubbish cleared up and burnt. Spray as petals fall. This applies to both stone and pip fruits. Old trees headed down earlier can be grafted over. Make a dean* cut surface and after grafting paint all wounds with tar. Vines should be tied in and if time permits go over and rub out unwanted buds. Peach trees. If unwanted buds are pinched out now it saves a lot of unnecessary growth.
