NELSON SPIRIT.
MASTERY OF THE SEA.
PLEA FOR YOUTH.
ENCOURAGEMENT URGED. (By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, Thursday. Declaring that the spirit of Nelson survived in New Zealand, Mr. W. P. Endean (National, Parnell) made a strong plea in the House of Representatives to-day for the encouragement of young men to take up a seafaring life.
Mr. Endean eaid he was pleased at the part taken at the Imperial Conference by the Prime Minister, Mr. Savage, in urging that Pacific shipping should be catered for entirely by New Zealand and Australia. It was fortunate, too, that the Minister of Marine, Mr. Fraser, was keen on this project.
The difficulties placed in the way of young men who desired to be apprenticed to the sea were mentioned by Mr. Endean and he suggested that the question should be discussed between the New 'Zealand and British Governments and shipping companies trading between the Dominion and Great Britain.
The traditions attaching to the sea were mentioned by the speaker, who said it would be a calamity if the youth of New Zealand were debarred from their heritage—the mastery of the sea.
