SOUTHERN RETURNS.
RECORD AT WELLINGTON. Customs revenue collected at the principal southern centres, Wellington, Chrietchurch and Dunedin, continues extremely buoyant. In Wellington for the third month in euecession net Customs revenue was easily a record and 30 was sales tax revenue. In Christchurch the increase over the figures for September, 1936, was more than £35,000, while I the duty collected at Dunedin came very near the record for the port of £86,602, established in 1923. Wellington. The net Customs revenue exceeded the previous record eet in August 'by £25,428 and is more than £00,000 in excess of the best month ever recorded before the depression.
Collections from all sources last month totalled £555,735. compared with £422,802 in September, 1936, an increase of £132,933. The following figures show the revenue for last month, the figures for September, 1936, being also given:— Customs revenue: September, 1937, £385.369; September, 1936, £283,601. Motor spirit at 6d a gallon: £41.232, £37,277. Motor spirit at 4d a gallon: £29.493, £24,857. Tyre tax: £3100,£1073. Sales tax: £119.705, £95,100. Beer excise: £6329, £5751.
The figures for nine months of this year and the same period of 1936 are as follows:—Customs: 1937, £2.810,884; 1936. £2,400,836. Motor spirit: £622.927; £608,666. Tyre tax: £19.898; £15.859. Sales tax: £978.510; £776,944. Beer excise: £53,153; £43,782. Christ church. Customs returns for the month of September in 1936 and 1937 are as follows:—Customs: £94,928; £120,720. Beer excise: £10.834; £8518. Petrol tax: £18.699; £25,063. Tvre duty: £901; £1231. Sales tax: £33.916; £38,112. Light duties on shipping, £508; £555. Export levies:—Wool: Nil; £62. Meat: £363; £61S. Miscellaneous: £75; £54. Totals: £160.224; £195,933.
The returns for the six months in 1936 and 1937 are as follows:—Customs: £525,284; £650.686. Beer excise: £47,597; £57.480. Petrol tax: £116,352; £135.077. Tvre duty: £5593; £7230. Sales tax: £191.277; £238.349. Light dues: £3012; £4015. Export levies: —Wool: £1937; £1570. Meat: £4396; £5100. Miscellaneous: £592; £298. Totals: £894,103; £1,099,805. Dunedin. The figures for September were as follows, the comparative figures with respect to September, 1936, also being given:—Customs: September, 1937, £83.653; September. 1936, £64.655. Beer duty: £25,111;' £22,067. Sales tax: £24,945; £23.684. Petrol tax at 6d per gallon: £15,699; £12.357. Tyre duty: £777; £477. Gold export duty: £1574; £933. Half-yearly totals for the period from April to September, inclusive, for 1937 and 1936 were as follows: —Customs: 1937, £424,649; 1936, £353,204. Beer duty: £139.540; £125,655. Sales tax: £157,572; £140,439. Petrol tax at 6d a gallon: £87.531; £77.343. Tyre duty: £5816; £4094. Gold export duty: £11,378; £10,984.
