WARDEN ATTACKED.

Rising in America's Devil's

Island.

ALCATRAZ INCIDENT.

SAN FRANCISCO, September 26.

A revolt of convicts occurred in the famous Alcatraz island prison, where the system is alleged to be the strictest in the world, and resulted in the severe beating of the warden, Mr. James Johnston.

One hundred of the 280 convicts in the prison had been ordered solitary confinement for holding a "sit-down" strike, refusing to work, in order to obtain more privileges. Mr. Johnston was making an inspection of the mess hall when a young bank robber, serving a life sentence, sprang on him and viciously struck him down with his bare fists. Mr. Johnston was also kicked on the head when he was prostrate.

The guards pulled off the assailant, who was immediately thrown into an old Spanish dungeon in solid rock below waterline.

The notorious gangster, Al Capone, who is an inmate of the prison, was not involved in the strike or the fracas.
