PLACED 165 MEN.
TRANSPORT BOARD'S PART.
ASSISTING UNEMPLOYMENT
A request from the Placement Officer to the Auckland Transport Board that it should try to give employment to more painters under the subsidy scheme was refused by the board this morning on the ground that all work of that sort was completed. To take on more men now was impossible without displacing some of the permanent staff, it was pointed out. The board's policy was to place as many men as possible in permanent employment, and as a result of their acceptance of Government policy they had taken on 165 men.
The Hon. F. E. Lark, referring to this, suggested that it was not a fair thing for the Placement Office to make continual appeals to boards. If there was work to be done it should be done by men permanently employed, and the boards should not require Government money to do work that had to be d<jnc in any cane.
