COASTERS DELATED.
HEAVY RAIN AT WHANGAKEI. The gale was being felt this afternoon all along the'northern coast. In addition to the delay caused to the Awatea, coastel shipping was held up at harbours where the growing force of the storm was being experienced. The Northern Steamship Company, Limited, reported this afternoon that the Kawau was barbound at Mangawai. She was scheduled to leave Mangawai on Saturday, but for the past two days there was no; prospect of crossing the : bar, and she will have to remain in port until the weather moderates. The company's auxiliary vessel Motu, scheduled to leave Awanui to-day, is also held up.
A report from Whangarei' this afternoon stated that the wind had dropped and that heavy rain had followed, there being prospects of floods in the district. A report from Russell stated that the wind was blowing very hard from the south-east. The harbourmaster there reported that a fresh gale blew all night with big seas and rain squalls, but the •conditions were improving this afternoon. H.M.S. Wakakura arrived there from Auckland yesterday.
