RACING FORBIDDEN.
UNION COMPANY'S STATEMENT AWATEA'S SAILING TIME. Racing Is forbidden by the regulations of the Union Steam Ship Company, according to a statement issued by the head office of the company in connection with the nailing from Auckland this week of the Awatea and the Matson liner Mariposa. A report from Sydney published on Saturday mentioned the possibility of a race between the two ships, each of which is expected to -leave Auckland at 10 p.m. on Friday next. The Union Company explained to-day that it was with the object of keeping the two vessels clear of each other that the Awatea's sailing time had been changed from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. The Mariposa was at the time of that alteration scheduled to leave Auckland at 5 p.m. on the same day, but her time of departure had also since been put back to 10 o'clock. While- the Awatea'e speed capabilities would be tested on a suitable- occasion, stated the company, it had no intention of allowing the vessel to enter a race with the Mariposa when the two vessels left for Sydney on Friday. It-in not unusual for the Matson ships to leave Auckland for Sydney later than their scheduled, time, .■.',.;)
