AFTER MANY YEARS.
More than twenty years have passed since the construction of a railway from Napier to Gisborne "was authorised. Since then the hopes of the residents of Northern Hawke's Bay and Poverty Bay have been often disappointed, and once almost destroyed. In 1930 the Public Works Department reported that one section of the line,' from Eskdale (just north of Napier) to Putoriro, was almost ready for opening, and that the more difficult section from Putoriro to Wairoa would be completed in less than three years. Then came the slump, and the earthquake, and work on the line was suspended for four years. The new Government, however, placed the resumption of construction in the forefront of its programme, and with the reeent completion of the viaduct over the Mohaka River, the chief obstacle on the route was removed, and now it is announced that a goods service has been opened between Napier and Wairoa, With the completion of the WairoaGisborne section the district's hopes (now less urgent, because of the great improvement of motor roads and the advent of air transport) will at last be realised.
