HOUSING SURVEY.
AUCKLAND CITY AREA, ADDITIONAL DISTRICTS. WORK HEARS COMPLETION. One of the most comprehensive and intricate operations being carried out by the Auckland City Council is a housing survey of the city, a work that was started on April 1 last, and is nearing [Completion. In the original area defined Particulars were sought in regard to 13,000 housing i nits, and it has' now been decided to include, some small areas in Parnell, Ponsonby and Grey Lynn,' | which will add another 1500 housing units. ' ~ Under "the direction of the . city engineer, Mr. J. Tyler, a staff of nineteen I men has been constantly engaged. Working, in pairs the men have been able to cover an average of 18 to 25 . housing I units a day. This number varies as information may be more readily obtained iin some caseiß, while apartment houses add considerably to the work. A great deal of information has to be gathered, ranging from valuations, building materials, persons and number in occupation, available accommodation and condition of buildings, the latter being regarded as o p of the most important aspects of the inquiry. As the information is gathered it is prepared in. a tabulated form, and finally it will be given in map form, together with a complete repor. on housing in the city. This will be submitted to the City Council, and then the Government. The cost of the survey to the city will be approximately £1400.
