MILK COUNCIL.

In a statement published in the •'Star* on the 16th inst- Mr. Goldstine. chairman of the Milk Council, claims that a reduction in the retail price of milk can be brought about only by the adoption of the amendments to the Milk Act presented to Parliament, las, session. Such claim, without reducing the price allowed the producers and vendors, is definitely fallacious, taking the conaciFs own figures, it is seen that additional eartage made necessary by pooling all mOk wooid aznonm to Ifd per gallon, pine an amoun; which would at least equal that allowed for pasteurisation, 2Jd, for handling charges, etc_ plus the £d levy for the present unnecessary administrative expenses. While many consumers are at present being supplied with 5 per cent and higher testing milk, under tie proposed scheme milk of a definitely lower standard. 3-5 test, wonM be considered of good enough quality by the councfl. the higher testing mUk being broken down, the extxa cream being disposed of at the expense oi the cons-omer. One has only to experience the very low grade Tnsk supplied by the Wellington Municipal Depot to appreciate fully the high grade of ntOk available from producer-vendors of AncVmnd, which service all are well advised to do raeir utmost to retain by registering their objection to the proposed pooling and aoning , scheme. Assuming the Government is satisfied with its various price fixation srfieTnes, surely it is not too much io look for the repeal of the Milk Act and its amendments and a substitution of price fixation, together with a rigid inspection of cow?;, sheds, plant and mensDs, etc Such a scheme >>«* both economic and hygienic advantages, B- L. PRESTOS.
