SHOP-LIGHTING.

COMMUNITY SYSTEM. KARANGAHAPE ROAD IRQUBLE.

A confession of failure in the efforts made by the Karangahape Road Business Promotion Society to carry to success a proposal for "community shoplhrhting in the street was made to the Auckland Electric Power Board yesterday. In a letter admitting inability to carry on with the scheme, the secretary of the society stated that refusal of the City Council to guarantee the cap'tal expenditure of £1200. as had been done by the local authority for similar schemes in other areas, had placed tho proposal beyond the resources of the society. An effort had been made to get personal guarantees, but the amount was so large that the individual obligation entailed proved insuperable. Mr. M. J. Bennett expressed deep disappointment that the proposal had not been carried through, as he felt that this shop-lighting system in the Karangahape Road area would be more proportionately beneficial to that centre than the system was to the smaller centres. It would especially benefit tho section of the street where the rents at present were low. Mr. R. H. Bartley. the board'* jeneral manager, thought a further endeavour should be made to find a solution to the financial problem, in view of the very material benefit the community ehoplighting system would confer "on the area. Every possible avenue of obtaining the necessary finance should be explored, and he suggested that the matter be deferred pending further consideration. Mr. E. H. Potter suggested a discussion with the City Council, in view of the improvement to the general streetlighting scheme likely to be brought about by community ehop-lighting at that particular point. The matter was deferred pending a report by the general manager, who was authorised to make negotiations which might be incidental to promoting the scheme.
