TARIFF REFORM.
TO HELP RECOVERY. 'VARSITY HEAD'S RETURN. EMPIRE'S STABILITY. Many of the countries he had visited in a seven months' tour were in an unsatisfactory condition through pursuing a policy of economic nationalism to extremes, said the Hon. J. A. Hanan, deputy-Speaker in the Legislative Council and Chancellor of the University of Xew Zealand, who returned yesterday by the Niagara after attending the Coronation celebrations as the representative of those two bodies. Eestraints on the restoration of international trade and the unstable currencies of several countries were' retarding world peace and general economic progress, he eaid. "The steps taken by some countries to undertake a policy of tariff modifications are
healthy signs, however, and if they are followed by the general body of nations there will be grounds for optimism and a substantial economic recovery." Conversations with people in different parts of Europe, said Mr. Hanan, indicated that a world war was the last thing desired. The countries wished to confine their energies to economic recovery and social advancement. Mr. Hanan was • impressed by the stress placed on research Work in all the educational institutions he visited. Increased financial assistance was being given to universities in America and Britain, where the Governments realised the potential advantages of higher education. Britain was now carrying on physical education on the same lines as those adopted in Germany.
