HOCKEY STANDARD IN AUSTRALIA.

Higher, Says Captain s Of the English Team.

"The standard of Australian play ift much higher than it was when we met them in South Africa seven years ago," said Miss E. M. Ward, captain of the English ladies' hockey team, who passed through Auckland by the Monterey today. Miss Ward was accompanied by Miss E. Gunnell, another member of the team, and they were joined here by Misses Judd, Bolt and Hodfckinson, other team members who have been spending a week in New Zealand on their way home, "We chose to spend our extra week in Sydney," said Miss Ward, "as we had many friends there and we preferred to Bee one place properly rather than rush through New Zealand.

"We are not an international team," continued Miss Ward, explaining that thrp were all members of county teams, ana the main object of their tour was to play the different States of Australia. "I myself come from Kent, and Miss Gunnell is from Surrey. We had a very successful tour and some excellent games were played. Of the nineteen matches played we won thirteen, drew two, and lost four. All the matches, however, were well fought and we thoroughly enjoyed the'whole tour. I only wish," she added, "that we had time to see New Zealand."
