SENT TO GAOL.
SHIP'S FIREMAN CHARGED.
CHINESE ASSAULTED.
Christopher Connell (43) was charged in the Police Court this morning before Messrs. V. A. Coyle and W. J. Jaffrey, •T.P.'s, with assaulting Wong Hoo, committing mischief by wilfully damaging an overcoat valued at £4 4/, the property of Wong Hoo, and with using obscene language.
Sub-Inspector Fox said that accused, who had had some liquor, went to a Chinese laundry in Grey's Avenue last evening, where he struck the Chinese and damaged the coat. When the police were sent for the accused complained that one of the Chinese had bitten him. Accused then used obscene language, and the sergeant had to put his hand over his mouth to prevent his continuing.
Mr. T. B. Slipper, who appeared for accused, said that accused had got tangled up with some Chinese. They knew that he had been drinking, and should not have aggravated him. Accused belonged to a ship which was leaving for Australia to-day, and it would be better to let him go'than have him thrown on the community.
Accused was fined £4 4/ for damaging the overcoat, and was sentenced to one month's imprisonment on the assault charge, and two months' imprisonment on the charge of using obscene language, the «entence& to be concurrent.
