STATE HOUSING SCHEME.
SPEEDING UP OPERATIONS
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)
WELLINGTON. Wednesday
Evidence of the extent to which the activities of the Department of Housing Construction are contributing, and are likely to contribute, toward a solution of the unemployment problem, was contained in figures made available to-day by the Parliamentary Under-Secretary in charge of housing. Mr. J. A. Lee. "Up to a fortnight ago." said Mr. Lee." there were engaged in actual housing construction 01S employees. These figures take no cognisance of the men engaped in allied trades, such as the manufacture of bricks, tiles, pipes and stoves, and those engaged in getting the timber out of the bush and making concrete accessories and so on."
'1 he Department was commencing to call for tenders with greater sjteed. and it was probable that at the point at which the programme contemplated bv the Government was attained there would be no fewer than 4000 employees engaged in actual building. To "that could be added at least an equal number engaged in the preparation of necessary materials.
