WARNING TO N.Z.
PREVENT SLUM AREAS.
EXAMPLES IN WALES,
(From Our Own Correspondent.)
NEW PLYMOUTH, this day.
The distressed areas in Waleg were discussed by the Rev. F. Hart in an address to the New Plymouth Rotary Club. Mr. Hart is a Welshman and was speaking from personal knowledge of the position.
'If you could only see the conditions in this area your hearts would bleed at the horrible conditions which these people suffer," he said. "The ajrea extends through a series of valleys for about 160 miles—about the distance between New Plymouth and Hamilton."
In the mines there was on an average 400 men injured and from two to three killed every working day. The average annual earnings per man was £119, and in making this computation those highly paid men with salaries of from £2000 to £3000 per year were included. There were many working for 32/6 a week with families and still keeping their heads above water.
"I appeal to you," said Mr. Hart, "to see that conditions of this type never come to New Zealand. If there should be any signs of a slum area forming, stamp it out immediately. You cannot do anything to help these people, but you can see that similar conditions never occur in New Zealand."
