LEANDER FOR N.Z.

LEAVES TO-MORROW.

j DUE HERE IN AUGUST

| H.M.S. Leander, the new cruiser which is to enter service'in the New Zealand 1 Division of the Royal Navy, will leave Devonport, England, for Auckland toJ morrow. She will arrive here on August 27, the voyage allowing for refuelling and the making of several courtesy calls. H.M.S. Achilles, the flagship on the New Zealand station, will arrive back from her winter cruise in ■ the Pacific Islands the same day, when 1 the Commodore, Rear-Admiral the Hon. I E. R. Drummond, will receive a call ' aboard the flagship from Captain J. i Rivett-Carnac, commander of the Leander.

The Leander is the first of the class

to which the Achilles also belongs, but her displacement is greater by 110 tons than that of the Achilles. In dimensions they arc almost identical and they could be termed sister ships, the only difference being tliat the Achilles incorporates a number of minor improvements.

Captain Rivett-Carnac commissioned the Leander for service in the New Zealand Division last April and for some weeks after that date she was attached to the Second Cruiser Squadron of the Home Fleet. The Leander represented New Zealand at the Coronation naval review at Spithead.
