CANADA'S INDUSTRY.
PROGRESS OF COUNTRY. LUNCHEON ADDRESS. "I can't let this opportunity pass without attempting to correct the common belief in many {tarts that Canada ir merely a little brother of the I nited States and that Canadian industry is really owned and controlled by the I n:ted States." said the Canadian Trade Commissioner. Mr. W. F. Bull, in a luncheon address to members of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce. "This is far from the truth, and one of our statistical sources has recently it- - Hcd an interesting rej>ort on this point of ownership of Canadian manufacturing industries. They found that out of every 100 dollars involved in Canadian manufacturing industry in 19tv>. i 0 dollars was Canadian c.ipitti 1 7 20 dollars American capital and 10 dollars I nit-ed Kingdom and other capital." Mr. Bull traced the development of Canada through the eras of fur. fish and i mi,her. agriculture and mining and manufacturing. He spoke of problems raced t-o-doy in some of these activities, mentioning the prospect of a shortage of newsprint within the next few rears. Dealing with Canada as an exporting countrj . Mr. Bull said its contention— backed by statistics—was that it bought practically as much from Xew Zealand as Xew Zealand did from Canada.
