WORK OF COUNCIL

N.l MINISTERS ATTEND. (From Our Own Correspondent.) GENEVA, May 24. Tlic Council of the League of Xations held its ninth meeting at five o'clock to-day in private session. The High Commissioner. Mr. W. J. Jordan, and the Minister of Labour, the Hon. H. T. Armstrong, represented Xew Zealand. At the opening public meeting, of the Council, Mr. Armstrong represented Xew Zealand, sitting between the representative of China, Dr. Wellington Koo, and the representative from Rumania. It will be remembered that the Council of the League is the executive body. It consists of four permanent members —the United Kingdom, Italy, France and the U.S.S.R. —and eleven members elected for a term of three years. Usually the Council meets four times a year. Xew Zealand was elected a member in 193 G. The United States, which is not a member of the League, keejis observers and a secretariat at Geneva. so that the American *ioveminent may be closely informed of what is happening. ' Each country represented on the Council lias office accommodation at the jnew League ftuildinjr. but the Xew Zealand section is occupied only when the Council meets. It will be noted that Xew Zealand has no secretariat or )>erjuiaiieut representative at Geneva to (assist with the New Zealand share of 'the Council's work. At present the work iis done by the Hijrh Commissioner and I members of his staff in London. Finland. South Africa, the Irish Free State and Canada all maintain a representative in Geneva, although these countries lare not on the Council of the League. The Xew Zealand delegates are Mr. (Jordan and Mr. Armstrong, with Dr. W. [B. Sutch as assistant.
