DOCTORATE AWARDED

AUCKLANDER'S SUCCESS.

SEISMOLOGICAL RESEARCH.

The degree of doctor of philosophy in the faculty of mathematics in the University of Cambridge has been awarded to Mr. K. E. Bulleu, lecthrer in mathematics at the Auckland University College. Dr. Bullen, who recently held a Strathcona Exhibition at St. John's College, Cambridge, spent two years in research work with a leading authority on the constitution of the earth, Dr. H. Harold Jeffreys. The work entailed a comprehensive analysis of major earthquakes during the past few years with a view to evolving accurate tables showing the travel times of various earthquake pulses. The tables drawn up are now known as the Jeffreys-Bullen tables and are used throughout the world. Recently they were adopted by the International Seisniological Association. Dr. Bullen has also studied widely earthquake problems in the Dominion. He has established the fact that the earthquake of June 29, 1921, which had an epicentre near that of the great Napier earthquake, had a much deeper focus, and that it was probably a substantial factor in the production of unstable conditions nearer the surface, which led to the 1931 disaster.
