The view that increases in rates were very small when increases in «wt* were taken into acconnt was expressed br several members of the Manukaa CwmtV Council when the annual estimates were presented by the treasurer, ilr.-E. Ashcroft, at a meeting to-day.# Tlie chairman, Mr. F. M. Watew. said the council had endeavoured to adjnst its finances with the object of obviating any increase in ratinjr burden on ratepayers at tlie present time. The conncil had to provide for increases in workmcosts, however, and had to maintain its services. The increased hospital lew necessitated a rise in the hospital rates in the countv.
The estimates provided for an increase of the peneral rate in the PfcMknra riding of £97, in the Palnnw™ riding- of £24*. and in the Papatoeioe riding of £2,<;. Decreases in special rates of a temporary nature were provided in Tapakura riding ( £132), in the Papatoetoe riding (£322) and the Turanga riding ( £227). The total increase over t"he eonntv for the current year amounted to £888. ot which £+86 was for waterworks purposes.
The chairman gave notice of that he would formally move the striking of the following rates at the next meeting of the council: Mangere riding: General rate, 55-013; conversion loan special rate 40-643-waterworks loan. 32-6+ d. Patrons* ridinjr: fd; conversion lon, • 8-64 d; Buckland s Beach irater snpptr. - Papakura riding: General, Id; eon\er.«ioii loan. 24-G4d. Papa-toetoe riding: General. Id: conversion loan. 31*«<d. Turanga riding: General. 1 .">O-64d; conversion loan. 3fi-«4d. Wairoa riding: <» en oral. 1 34-G4d; conversion loan, 27-iUd.
A hospital and charitable aid t%c whole county of 13-32 d was. recommended.
