ATTRACTIVE EMBLEM.
SYMBOLIC OF DOMUfIOK.
Emblematic of New Zealand and its discovery, the attractive crest of H.M.S. Endeavour, which is shortly to begin a survey of the ljfew Zealand coast, embellishes the tip of her bowsprit and the stem of the ship's boats. It consists of four stars, representing the Southern Cross as on the Xew Zealand Ensign, with an open compass inset. The navigator's compass is symbolic of exploration and discovery.
Interesting features of the chip's equipment are two stout coppersheathed motor launches, employed in sounding work, for which they are fitted with the most modern echo-sounding apparatus. To facilitate control they have Kitchen rudders, the operation of which may alter the speed of the boat without lessening or increasing the speed of the engines.
The rudder, which is set just abaft the propeller, is arranged like two conca\e spoons which, when opened parallel, offer no resistance to the progress of the boat through the water. As they are closed behind the rudder, the narrowing of the space has a retarding effect, and when the sides come together the thrust from the screw drives the boat astern.
