CITRUS INDUSTRY.

NORTH ISLAND GROWERS. FEARS OF FRUIT FLY. That there was every indication that the steps proposed by the Commission of Inquiry into fruit marketing regarding the citrus industry would be instituted at an early date was. revealed today in a statement concerning the proceedings of a meeting of North Island growers interested in the citrus industry, held last night at the nmrkets of Messrs. Turners and CI rowers. Earlier in the day the executive of the Auckland Citrus Growers' Association, together with delegates from Tauranga and Kerikeri. had met Messrs. F. R. Picot and J. Thomas, of the Internal Marketing Department, in conference. Much progress was reported to have been made.

ill*. .T. A. Lambden, president of the association, has been nominated by the growers as the Auckland representative for the Citrus Marketing Authority to be set up by the Government. The Kerikcii and Tauranga districts will shortly each put forward its nominee.

The following resolutions were passed by the large gathering of growers yesterday: (1) That this representative meeting of citrus growers express its disapproval of the lifting of the embargo 011 New South A\-ales citrus fruits except under quantitative restriction; (2) that the Government be urged not to permit any fruit from fly infested areas to enter New Zealand.

Steps are being taken to link up all growers, interested in citrus fruits with the Auckland association, which for many years has carried the burden of watching the interests of the industry. The Minister of Agriculture, the Hon W. Lee Martin, indicated at a recent field day at Avondnle that the Government would much prefer to deal with such a body organised to represent the whole industry.
