ECLIPSE PARTY.
Film and Canvas Records of Expedition. STUDY OP BIRD LIFE. (Received 10 a.m.) SYDNEY, this day. A radio message from the New Zealand solar eclipse expedition on Canton Island, in the Phoenix Group, states: — Eclipse drill was held yesterday by both parties in preparation for the day of the solar eclipse, Tuesday. All the Americans' instruments are completed. The New Zealanders' coronagraph is ready and their 78-inch camera will be completed by Monday. Yesterday Messrs. Buddie, Rose and Alton landed on the far side of the lagoon to study birds. The American Geographic Society's photographer, Mr. Stewart, is making a complete movie record of the expedition and of the island's bird life. An artist, Mr. Bettinger, is painting the birds. The New Zealanders dined with the Americans and took the opportunity to TOinpare progress and discuss the problems for observations of the eclipse. Facing the lagoon is the largest assembly of instruments ever erected to observe an eclipse. The artist, Mr. Bettinger, will paint the corona, and a Aim of the eclipse will be "shot." Navy technicians will make ionosphere investigations.
