TRADESMAN BEST.
THIS MORNXKG'S GALLOPS. SEVERAL HORSES SCHOOL. The best gallops at Ellerslie this morning were those of Tradesman, Locknit and Tooley Street, while Crooning also put up a useful effort over seven furlongs. No. 3 grass track was available for fast work, but the bulk of the horses did pace work on the sand track. The hurdle course in the centre was also open. Tradesman (Wiggins) finished in front of Armacourt (C. G. Goulsbro) over sis furlongs, run in 1.20 3-5. They ran the first three furlongs in 38 3-ss, and Tradesman, who was out wide atVtlie turn, came home full of running. Considering the state of the going it was a first-rate trial. Locknit (Green) and Aero Queen (Moody) were allotted a similar task,-tak-ing 1.22 1-5. They were together at the end' of the first three furlongs, which took -38 2-ss, but Locknit was clear of his companion at the finish. • * Crooning (Walker) gave Valise (Vaughan) a start from the seven-furlong post and was in front at the conclusion in 1.36 4-5. Crooning ran her last halfmile in 55 l-ss, and did her Work well. Modern Maid (Thomson) got to the end of six furlongs in 1.29 1-5, and Serman (Fearn) covered the same distance in 1.23 4-5.- The latter did his work nicely. Billy Boy shaped better than Erase in a work-out over a mile and a half, being timed to run the last six futlongs in 1.27 4-5. The stablematee Free Air and Backblock covered a round In 1.56, taking 57 4-5s for their last half-mile. Tooley Street (Kearns") reeled off half a mile in 545. He looks none the worse for his race in the Cornwall Handicap on Saturday and handled the heavy going well. The Jumpers. Prince of Orange (Ferguson) was schooled over four hurdl'es in the centre. He had a fair amount of pace on and gave a good exhibition. He will compete on the later days of the meeting. Bass (Watson) jumped eight hurdles ill all and his display for a a really good one. Although he has not yet raced over fences, Bass has done a lot of schqpling in: private a nd had little to learn at toe game. j Valpai (Day) and Friendly Boy (Jones) were companions over four hurdles. The former gave a good showing, but Friendly Boy came "to grief at the last fence. C-arshalton (Stewart) cleared a couple of pony hurdles safely and afterwards was sent over one of the bigger obstacles. ■ Black Marlin Recovered... . Black Marlin accomplished pace- work over' a. round, increasing the --speed over the last three furlongs. He pulled up all right and R. S. Bagby stated this morning
that the horse will fulfil his engagement in the Great Northern Steeplechase on Wednesday. He has improved in condition since racing at the Waikato meeting, though he still looks a shade on the big side.
