HOSPITAL SURGEONS.
METHOD OF ELECTION. REGRET AGAIN EXPRESSED. ' Regret that the Auckland Hospital Board had seen fit to appoint its honorary surgeons by methods not in accordance with established custom, was again expressed by Sir Louis Barnett, president of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, yesterday afternoon. Sir Louis, who is also vice-president of the New Zealand branch of the British Empire Cancer Campaign, arrived in Auckland yesterday morning from the South to attend the annual meeting of the campaign, and left in the evening. He had laid his views before, the public in no uncertain terms, Sir Louis said, because he felt strongly that the honorary surgeons of a hospital should be elected by those who possessed the proper qualifications and knowledge to do so. As president of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, he had voiced his disapproval of a hospital, as an educational centre for young surgeons, which did not elect its honorary medical officers in the recognised manner. The College of Surgeons, Sir Louis said, had not yet had time to discuss the matter of whether the Auckland Hospital should continue to hold its status as a centre for the training of surgeons. "I hope that the whole problem of the rearrangement of hospital organisation throughout New Zealand will be dealt with under the National Health Scheme," he added. He did not know, however, whether or not that would definitely be attempted under the scheme.
