I MR. CHAMBERLAIN'S BUDGET. Mr. Neville Chamberlain's business profits ; tax. otherwise known as the National Defence j Contribution, was hotly criticised in many : quarters when it was announced, and an amusing- =ummarv of the criticism was given in the House of' Commons bv a National ! Labour member. Mr. R. ('. Morrison. He said • that in reading the financial newspapers he i had come across .i great variety of expressions regarding the Hiulgot. lie had collected those expression* and had arranged them alphabetically. They were: Anger. astonishment, ' bludgeoning, bleeding industry | Mr. Churchill: Now, be careful. (Loud laughter.) Mr. Morrison: The right lion, gentleman I need have no fear. (Laughter.) ! The lion, member continued his list with : dismay, disaster, erratic, enrage, farewell, folly, futile, and Oradgrind Chancellor. He found i that (Iradgrind was defined as: ''One who ' regulates all human things by rule of compass 'and mechanical application of statistics, allowing nothing for sentiment, emotion and individuality.'' (Laughter.) The word was derived from Tln-nias (iradgrind in Charles Dickens' ,'Tfard Times." ' The lir-f continued, height of folly. Imm- : shackle, insecurity, instability, jerry, jumping jack, knavish, loose, malignant, numb, oppressive, perilous, quarrelsome, slap-dash, tangled, unwanted, unfair, violent, v'r/ious. wicked. , and wanton. Then came yahoo, about which he consulted a dictionary anil found it meant as of despicable character. (Laughter.) Finally, there was zealot, which he discovered meant one who was warmly engaged in anyj thing. (Renewed laughter.)
