1 WEST AUSTRALIA BEATEN. FIRST TKT TO FULL-BACK. I PERTH. May 31. The subordinate position of Rugby in West Australia, combined with the late landing of the Springboks, intensified the debut of the visitors as a practice exhibition game, but there was sufficient opposition to show the visitors' belief in fast, open play and giving the backs the ball instead of, as aforetime, seeking touch and trusting tc massive forward work. * With the players obviously needing practice, it was difficult to judge their real strength, but undoubtedly they are fast in attack and strong in defence. Several tlaslies of brilliance revealed plenty of quality at the back of the scrum, the full-back. Turner, securing applause for the first score to the vkitors after a pretty piece of three-quarter play. The impression was left that they are a good, solid team and well combined, with brilliant possibilities among the backs. The visitors had 36 points to their credit before the home team scored, although the latter at one period kept the visitors on the defensive for ten minutes. The game ended with the scores: Springboks 47, West Australia 8. The captain, P. J. Xel, told the representative of the Press Association that the team would play under the South African rules and conditions only. The tour wa« not a struggle for the world's champions.lip. but just a friendly visit to another country t» play a friendly game of Rugby. The Avhole team was particularly interested in the New Zealand visit, as a test of strength and to compare standards. If they did not win they would undoubtedly learn. The team re-embarked to-night for Adelaide.
