ASSISTING PRODUCERS.
DEALING WITH SURPLUS
The Government is prepared to assist ej;g producers to obtain a satisfactory price for eggs during the flus.li summer season, and the Internal Marketing Department is anxious to take steps to set up organisations in the various centres to cope with the export egg surplus so that summer production can be carried out without a loss to the producer, according to a statement made to a Cliristchurch reporter by Mr. F. R. Picot, Director of Internal Marketing. Last week be held a meeting with representatives of the Poultry Board and producers and agents in the industry, with the aim of working out arrangements for a plan that will secure an adequate return to producers during the summer, and at the same time ensure a price satisfactory to the public. Mr. Picot said that a statement of policy would be issued by the Poultry Board in due course. The Department realised that the satisfactory disposal of the small surplus of export eggs would automatically adjust the internal marketing position so that producers would receive a reasonable price which, at the same time, would be acceptable to the consumer. The export of eggs represented only a small part of the industry, but it was recognised that it was essential to have it marshalled in a satisfactory way. With the export surplus removed, even though it was inihiitesimallv small, the producer would be enabled to secure an equitable return.
It was anticipated that this year, with the export of eggs handled on scientific lines, the producer would be enabled to return a sufficient margin of profit and the public would be able to buy fresh eggs at a reasonable price.
Christchurch was the largest egg-produ-cing centre in the Dominion, and e§gs were always retailed at a reasonable price. The Department was convinced that the public was equally anxious that both consumer and producer should have a reasonable price.
