The Editor suggests

OUR YOUNG ARTISTS.

The hook prize this time goes to Cazna Gawitb, of Kakahi. The next sketch was sent in by a young Budgetite. living at ; 5, Glen Road, Stanley Bay, Devonport. Venice Hemmingaen—The Easter designs were too late Tor the competition. Venice. The grouping: or the figures is good, but the execution is poor. Your lines are too scratchy and uneven. Cazna Gawith—You have sent in a beautifully clear wash drawing, Cazna. The design is good. I should like to see more of your work. Edna Pederaon—Quite a good sketch, Edna. is it a portrait or someone you know? Use a dark pencil Tor shading, as it gives a better light and shade elTect. Joyce Adams—it would be much better, Joyce, Tor you to send in original drawings than copied ones. Sketch is well done—nice clean lines—but don't use a ruler ror freehand drawing. Dora King—This sketch would have been greatly improved had it been drawn on better paper. I suggest you keep on making animal pictures, as your sketch shows that you have some ability In this direction. Aliater Hopkinaon—The lines are too scratchy, Alister. and the flowers are too. sparsely grouped. I think that you can do much better work, and I would like to see more sketches Trom you. i Walter Cleveland—A good attempt. Walter. When you are older you will learn something about perspective, and that will enable you to suggest the distance in your drawings, between various objects in a scene. You are evidently very rond or sketching, Walter, and 1 should like to see more or your work. Allan Cleveland—The same remarks apply to your work as to your brother's.! Mian. Don't send in sketches 011 lined 1 paper. 1 like the drawing or the bridge: very much. j

Eleanor Chapman—You have not grouped the trees in your sketch verv well, Eleanor ou could have had much better results had you grouped the tall trees on the right balanced by smaller ones on the lert. The treatment or the trees is too harsh—try to show more detail about outline. The heaviness or the silhouette can be relieved by leaving- one or two white patches to give the impression or light coming through the leaves and branches. Betty Fortnam—The outlines are a little heavy, Betty. A good clean sketch. Try more original type or subject ii'-xt time. J June Law ton—You have coloured the picture very neatly, June, and rna.le the sunset quite realistic. Trv to keep vour colours true to lire: the 'apple-: are' not natural looking, and one doe« n<t see purple roors. The main fault, however. is that you have used the same roi-mr ror the girl's rrock as the pink in the sun-et. there is not enough contra-t. Warwick Blackman—Thank von ror your sketches, Warwick. 1 liked tiie one : oT the little house and tree very much. Donald Oibba—Well, to begin with, Donald, I think there is too much «;milarity in the trees in the background They all look like pyramids, and every j " ne a tree perched 011 the top. Ynu j have got the right perspective ror the road and the telegraph poles. It is really too small a sketch for me to get any , accurate impression or your work. u * Leeae A very good sketch, j HODDy. \ou have placed the skvline very well, but your sketches are still rather •thin."' There should have been much heavier shading on the waves in the roreground. This sketch will be published with the alteration, and then you will be al)U* to see more rlearly what I mean. Esme Peacock-—Quite a charming design, Esme. You need a slight suggestion or background, then the figures would I not have the impression or floating in air. ; This Sketch will be published. Jack Moore— V very splendid attempt, ■ Jack. I will irive you a detailed criticism I when I return your sketch.
