B Opposition to any exteneion of the T Nelson system of religious instruction 3 in schools was expressed at the annual & meeting of the New Zealand Educational '- Institute. The following remit was i carried by 60 votes to 22: That it ie & desirable that religious instruction in Y echools should be limited to the Nelson e system. The mover of the remit, Mr. W. P. William, of Wanganui, said the insti- " tute had always been officially against e Bible teaching in schools. Mr. W. T. - Slater, of Ruapehu, who seconded the - motion, said the time taken was imo material. There was a principle at »- etake. He said he did not feel that >f he should lead children in devotional r. exercises. Mr. A. I. Isdale, of Wairoa, •s said the voluntary nature of the proposed exteneion was not really voluntary. Many people were taking devotional exercises because of the slight fear of the reaction of the community and education boards.
